We left Melaka today for the summer retreat of Malaysia – The Cameron Highlands. We knew it was going to be a long trip but when we left Melaka at 9:30 and arrived there 7 hours later we were stuffed.
We first took a bus from Melaka to a small town called Tapah. The lady at the desk said it would take 4 hours but she failed to mention that although it may only take 4 hours driving time, our bus stopped off twice at out of the way towns to pick up more passengers and another time for our bus driver to have lunch so in reality it was 5 and a half hours. When we hopped off at Tapah our next bus driver had a wild look in his eyes and what looked like gym gloves on. Well when we started our uphill drive to the Cameron Highlands we soon realised that only insane bus drivers would be able to drive that route everyday. It had countless switchbacks and more twists than a packet of cheese curls. This went on for an hour and a half and the adrenaline lasted for just as long.
By the time we arrived we were exhausted but still had to shoulder our heavy backpacks and try find our guesthouse. We soon discovered that the guesthouse we had wanted to stay at no longer operated but we managed to find another. After a brief rest we went to find some food.
There was a night market that seemed to be humming so we went to go have a look and picked up some delicious phyllo pastry type things filled with a chicken mix. The Cameron Highlands is considerably colder than the rest of Malaysia which is quite refreshing but we have also found ourselves a bit under prepared.
