Our minibus picked us up at our Guesthouse at around midday and we were glad to be on our way. But that was until we realised our driver was a crazy person who would actually put most African taxi drivers to shame! Being the last pick up of the morning we squashed onto the seat beside the driver on a taxi already overflowing with tourists. My bag was wedged precariously somewhere at the back behind someone's head, and after only a few minutes of driving managed to dislodge and crush some poor girls head. Oh the embarrassment! She squealed. The driver grunted, pulled over, and put in back in place. This is not a good start, I thought.
Being in front of the taxi, Phil and I had a very clear and unobstructed view of every roadside misdemeanor and traffic violation. Our driver flashed people constantly bullying others in front of us to the left and right; drove into oncoming traffic without a seconds' thought; and had us praying fervently while squeezing each others' arms.
Along the way (by way of distraction from the poor driving) I found the car ferries the most interesting. There were two, neither of which lasted longer than 15 minutes, and I kept thinking; 'Why not just build a bridge?!' I found the concept of sitting in one form of transport (a minibus) on another form of transport (a ferry) absolutely bizarre! Phil thinks I'm mad. And actually car ferries are quite normal (apparently).
We arrived in Krabi on-time - a Thai first! We hadn't booked accommodation (this is fast becoming an alarming habit of ours) but found a really nice place called Chan Cha Lay with rooms that actually have some decor and creative flair! Everything is blue and white, a very chic seaside motif, and so charming. After settling in, we headed to the 7-11 for a cheap (not very healthy) 2-minute noodle cup which we munched at the pier while watching the boats.
We spent the afternoon walking around, doing some much needed laundry, and sending a few emails. For dinner, despite the drizzle, we headed to some street food carts and had healthy (to make up for lunch) veggies and rice. Dessert was these little wafer pancake things with melted marshmellows in the middle and orange zest, which tasted exactly like my mom's potato cake (Hi Mom!). It made me miss home!
Tomorrow we're taking a boat to Railay Beach!
Until next time,
Luisa
Being married to Phil surely you are used to this sort of driving by now?
