Today we woke up, rolled out of our bungalow, and simply gasped at the beautifully crisp beach. It was still fairly early and, aside from a few young families, the beach was still waking up.
We rented a double kayak, snorkeling masks, and crossed our fingers -I'm no star athlete. Soon we were off, paddling on the green-blue water in search of the Emerald Caves. Local legend says that the cave was used by pirates to hide their gold, gems, and stolen wealth. Well, in that case, it's the prettiest safety deposit box I've ever seen. It took about 40 minutes to paddle there and swimming through the cave itself was frightening (especially because we are too cheap to go with a tour group and had to swim a good couple metres behind the group by ourselves just to go unnoticed). You couldn't see your hand in front of your face; it was pitch black and smelled vaguely of urine. Eventually, a light appeared up ahead and grew bigger and bigger. We could hear splashing and children squealing. The cave opens out onto this minute patch of sand/beach. We just stood with big eyes staring up at the cliffs and trees that surrounded us. It was a surreal experience - I never knew caves like this one existed!
Then we paddled to a spot we thought would be good for snorkeling. On our way there we saw a huge turtle just kinda drifting below the surface of the water - awesome! The snorkeling was such fun. An underwater city of beautiful neon, striped, spotted, and flashy fish greeted us. Our first snorkeling expedition in Tahiland was well worth it.
The rest of the day was boring compared to the earlier half. We spent the afternoon resting, reading, and playing cards. Dinner was a yummy Thai Green Curry for me and a Dry Red Curry for Phil that was insanely spicy!
Koh Mook is such a beautiful, relaxed, and family-centric island (we've seen more European toddlers than adults!). The locals are friendly and the travelers are chilled. We have so many other islands still to go to in Thailand; but can it even get any better?
Until next time,
Luisa
