Day 1 - The Great Adventure

We landed in Kuala Lumpur (called KL by those in the know :-) ), the capital of Malaysia, today after 18 hours of travelling! The flight with Saudi Arabian airlines was seriously good value for money - besides all the announcements being in arabic and the in flight entertainment being edited to their moral code (i.e all alcohol labels are blurred out and if somebody swears or says something about a pig - ham, bacon etc, it gets bleeped out) it was a very pleasant flight. My first impressions of Malaysians was quite good as the customs official who checked my passport looked at my picture and then me and said "what happened to the hair?" because the pic in my passport was when I was a young teen who thought afro's were cool (I secretly still think they are).

KL is a huge city and it is seriously humid here. We are staying in China Town which is really fantastic because we are right next door to the inner city train station and the most bustling and colourful part of the city right on our doorstep. We checked into our guest house, Matahari Lodge' and then went to walk the streets. It's what I imagine a typical asian city is meant to look like with chinese lanterns hanging across the streets and people and stalls everywhere. Scooters mount pavements and the traffic looks like it's an absolute nightmare but despite being tired and grumpy from lack of sleep I still loved it!

We had such a tough time deciding what to eat because we do not know that much about the cuisine and after looking at 20 or so food stalls we got sick of it and plonked ourselves down on some small blue stools on the street. An old malaysian man and his family were manning a cooking cart and this was their "restaurant". He had a menu which consisted of 4 pictures printed on one piece of paper and of course this was laminated. We pointed at the dish with prawns in it and 5 minutes later his wife brought us 2 steaming bowls of prawn mee. It was amazing! It was basically a prawn noodle soup with chicken and prawn in it and the taste was an intense sea food flavour with a bit of a bite. The best thing about it was that it cost us R13 for the bowl! So the budget is looking on track.
